WHAT SKILLS AND QUALITIES DO DIRECT CARE WORKERS NEED?
§ Direct care workers are compassionate, patient, and tolerant. They must be reliable and committed to providing quality care. Direct care workers must be able to work either independently or as part of a team.
§ You must be 18 or older to work as a direct care professional. For many direct care jobs, prior work experience is not necessary.
§ Some jobs may require fingerprinting and a criminal background and motor vehicle department check. You may also have to get a TB test.
§ For many direct care jobs, the employer provides training when a new employee starts work. For some jobs, you must complete specific training and get a certificate of completion. Some community colleges and training institutes offer courses in basic caregiving.
